Law
Connect
We are getting towards the halfway point of this series (and
only 2 books into the Old Testament). As
your group meets this week, invite them to reflect on God’s presence in their
life through this group.
As you gather, invite the group to consider this: Right now, what is the most difficult
commandment for you to follow? (If
your group needs a reference point, the 10 Commandments are found in Exodus
20).
Pray
This week, it would be great for us to share not just around
all of the measures, but specifically around the question of Trusting: Where does God rank?
Give your group time to consider this question silently, and
invite them to share in groups of 2 or 3 together, praying for one another to
continue to make their relationship with God highest priority in their
lives.
Reflect
Before you launch into a video or any new material, ask your
group if they have any insights or questions to share from Sunday’s
sermon. (As always, if questions are
really tough, you can direct them to me!)
Ask your group: When
you hear the word Law associated with the Old Testament, what feelings does it
bring up in you?
I invite you to watch this video about the Law. It helps to understand how the Law functions
throughout the Old Testament:
What does this video say that the purpose of the Law is for Israel?
If it is to show the other nations what God
is like, then how does the Law come to be associated as a negative thing?
How do the two tablets of the ten commandments work
together? (Commands 1-4 are about Israel’s
relationship with God and 5-10 are about their relationship with one another)
-How does
Jesus’ breakdown of the Law when he’s asked “What is the GreatestCommandment”
fit into this description? (See Matthew 22:36-40)
